Outdoor Education
Adventure at Lauriston

It is well recognised that providing students with opportunities to physically challenge themselves in the outdoors can lead to tremendous personal growth and confidence. Social growth, independence and an appreciation of our natural environment are also key reasons for providing students at Lauriston Girls' School with a strong outdoor education program.

Lauriston offers a sequential outdoor education program beginning in the junior school with their camps program, followed by Year 7 Camp, the Activ8 Program, Howqua, Year 10 Personal / Group Challenge Week and the Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme.

New in 2008, the Activ8 program includes an overnight team building camp where all students in their tutor group learn about water safety and gain confidence in the outdoors, through snorkelling and surfing activities. Progressing from this the girls are able to try optional weekend activities that broaden their experience in the outdoors, leading to increased confidence in their ability to meet the outdoor challenges of Howqua. A new feature is also the inclusion of Year 10 mentors for each of these activities, whose purpose is to encourage, assist, and motivate the Year 8 girls.

The Year 10 Personal / Group Challenge is also a new addition to the Outdoors Program. Recognising that girls have experienced many different challenges at Howqua, the Personal / Group Challenge week gives students the ability to select an activity they wish to extend their knowledge and ability in, and be actively involved in it’s planning, budgeting, and operation. There will be a variety of options that aim to challenge both groups and individual students.
