We believe full immersion in different schooling, cultures and lifestyles fosters cultural awareness, empathy, independence and a strong sense of global citizenship.

Every year students from Years 7 to 12 are given opportunities to be a part of trips and exchanges both in Australia and overseas, from Vietnam, Noonkanbah (an indigenous community in Western Australia) and NASA to Performing Arts in New York, a history and arts tour through Italy and hiking in Tasmania.

Our extensive Trips & Tours program inspires our girls to be curious, courageous and collaborative.

 

Cultural, Global, Curriculum Perspectives

NASA – Science & Technology (STEM)

The Advanced Space Academy program (or Space Camp) is held in December and sees students from Years 10 to 12 participate in a rigorous program that teaches them about the mental, emotional and physical demands astronauts face. Students are guided through the past, present and future of space exploration. The trip also includes visits to a variety of sites around San Francisco and Los Angeles including the Space Museum, Alcatraz, Marine Mammal Centre, iFLy Experience, California Science Centre including Space Shuttle Endeavour and Universal Studios Special Effects Tech Tour.​

Europe – Humanities

Literature and History will come alive as your daughter (Years 10 and 11) takes in the iconic sights of Europe through this experiential learning trip. By understanding the politics, economics and other major issues at that time, she will begin to understand how history has shaped her world. She will walk in the footsteps of Shakespeare, Austen and Dickens and understand how their lives informed their writing; visit the sites of Bletchley Park, Churchill’s War Rooms and the site of the grave of the Unknown Australian soldier at Adelaide Cemetery; be inspired by the possibility of studying Literature or History at Oxford University; and view a West End play to see a world-class adaptation of a text.

New York and Los Angeles – Performing Arts (Stage and Screen)

This tour will give Music and Drama students in Years 11 and 12 the opportunity to engage in a wide variety of activities that are created specifically for students. They will have the opportunity to gain practical experience in a range of music and drama activities, to attend performances of art forms including musical theatre, straight theatre, opera, ballet and orchestral concerts. Students will also have the opportunity to tour some of the iconic theatres of New York as well as visiting films studios in Los Angeles.

Italy – Visual Arts

Students of the Visual Arts (Years 10 and 11) will travel to Rome, Florence, Siena, San Gimignano, Pisa, Luca and Milan. Students will experience Italian art and culture from the Roman, Renaissance and contemporary periods. They will view art from varying historical perspectives and balance this with a visit to the Venice Biennale. They will experience, through guided tours and practical workshops, the significant contributions made to the development of Western art by the artists and architects of the Roman era, the Renaissance and global contemporary art practices.

Vibrant Vietnam

This unique tour gives girls from Years 7 and 8 an understanding the history, economics and major environmental issues of this vibrant culture. Tour highlights include:

  • Exploring Hanoi with its winding streets and French influence
  • A presentation from Australian NGO Aus4Equality on local projects and impacts
  • Participating in a sustainable agriculture and waste management program
  • Majestic Ha Long Bay overnight cruise, focusing on the impact of tourism on the area
  • Interacting with the local community and fishing on a traditional fishing boat
  • Learning about Vietnam’s emperors and their intriguing histories in Hue
  • Service learning program at a local Kindergarten
  • Touring a market and taking a traditional cooking class in Hoi An
  • Exploring Ho Chi Minh City

Exchanges

France

For students learning French in Year 10, this five-week exchange includes three weeks at a French school and two weeks of holiday with a host family to experience full immersion. Our exchanges schools are located in Reims, Lille, St Amand (all within an hour from Paris) and Paris.

Beijing, China

During the first two weeks of their stay, students in Year 10 take classes with our exchange students at Beijing National Day School and explore its many facilities. They are placed in classes from the IB, A-level (British) and AP (US/Canadian) curriculum, which gives them an insight into international courses, and participate in activities such as sword fighting, tai chi and rock climbing. The afternoons are spent exploring Beijing’s sights, including the Summer Palace, Tiananmen Square, the Forbidden City, Sanlitun and The Great Wall. Students stay with host families so that they may experience first-hand their rich culture and way of life.

Vancouver, Canada

This incredible opportunity over the September holidays sees our Year 10 students participate in a three-week cultural exchange to Vancouver, Canada. Students attend York House School and participate in all aspects of the school program and visit local attractions and events including Whistler and Canadian ice hockey matches.

United Kingdom, London

Year 10 students attend The City of London School and participate in its full program including excursions, such as the beach at Eastbourne for geography, and plays for Drama. Students stay with a host family and visit the iconic sights of London, such as St Paul’s Cathedral, the Tower of London, the London Eye, Harry Potter studios and much more. The exchange occurs over our September holidays for three weeks.

 

Community Service & Outdoor

Noonkanbah

This exchange provides a unique opportunity for five Year 11 students to live with the Noonkanbah community in the Kimberly region of Western Australia. Girls work as assistant teachers at the Kulkarriya Community Primary School and participate in a range of traditional indigenous practices which celebrate the cultural heritage of the community.

World Challenge Borneo

Borneo is home to one of the oldest rainforests in the world and one of only two places on the planet where orangutans roam wild. This trip for Years 10 and 11 is about getting involved in wildlife conservation, working alongside rangers to rescue and rehabilitate Bornean sun bears and collaborating with local ethnic groups to pipe clean water into rural rainforest communities.

World Challenge Cambodia

Year 10 students will visit the bustling city of Phnom Penh and the Khmer Rouge killing fields to learn first-hand about the culture and history of Cambodia. They will experience boating down the Mekong, hiking and exploring the stunning scenery of the Kulen Mountains with its many temples and historic sites, and visiting Angkor Wat. Living with a local community and helping redevelop their schools and essential services will be part of the community service aspect of this trip.

Duke of Edinburgh Award

Past highlights of our Duke of Edinburgh program include the Great Victorian Bike Trail and the Three Capes Hike in Tasmania. Available from Years 8–12, involvement in the Award encourages participants to pursue and maintain a wide range of desirable interests that will enhance their own development. Students are required to take more control of shaping their future as they follow their choice of interests. Students can tailor activities they currently participate in to fit the Award requirements.

It may be possible for Years 11 and 12 International Baccalaureate students to use aspects of the Creativity, Activity, Service (CAS) component of the IB course towards the Service component of the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award.

Successful completion of a level is rewarded by a recognised community award.
