Jean Hook joined the Lauriston staff in 1942 and taught general science, physics, chemistry, biology and middle school mathematics. She was senior mistress from 1947 until 1950, when she left to study medicine. She returned in 1952, and served as Head of Staff from 1956. Miss Hook died a month after retiring in June 1967. Her generous bequest to the school was put towards the second stage of the building plan: a new gymnasium, music department, Junior Creative Room, larger hockey field and two new tennis courts. In her honour, the Biology and Physics rooms in the new building were named the Jean Hook Science Wing.Â
