Quality Teaching Rounds Model
Amongst the many professional learning programs that our teaching staff undertake is the whole school initiative known as Quality Teaching Rounds (QTR). This program is unique in that all Lauriston staff across Junior School, Senior School and Howqua are involved. Developed in 2003 by Associate Professor James Ludwig and Laureate Professor Jenny Gore from the University of Newcastle, its primary focus is to support teachers to understand high quality teaching practice that makes a positive difference to student learning. It has been the subject of multiple rigorous research studies over the past 20 years and has been shown to improve the outcomes for students by encouraging teachers to focus on 18 different elements. Many of our Lauriston teaching staff have completed multiple training workshops offered by the University of Newcastle to ensure that they understand the elements, and how to effectively embed them in their teaching practice.
As educators, we find that the model treats teaching holistically, reflecting the complexity of teaching while also respecting already established classroom practice. The QT model clearly articulates what we believe to be excellence in classroom teaching and provides us with a rigorous teaching framework.
“It does not matter where you are in your teaching journey, Quality Teaching Rounds are a powerful opportunity to further develop your teaching practice, whilst positively connecting and learning with your colleagues.”Â
Kate Hehir, Assistant Principal - Junior School
